Fallow deer, pigs, cats and rabbits were removed by 2008 but two species of rat, Rattus rattus (ship rat) and Rattus exulans (kiore), remained. Numbers of both species of rat are controlled to the extent that ship rats have been effectively eliminated but currently there is continual invasion of ship rats from the nearby Aotea/Great Barrier Island, only 80 metres away at its closest so well within swimming distance for ship rats. The Trust receives annual rat monitoring reports. No other mammalian pests have been observed on the island but like most of the rest of New Zealand wasps are abundant over summer and autumn.

Plant pests on the island include many of the usual species associated with farming and escaped garden plants as well as plants whose seeds are carried by the wind. Many of these plants are attacked where they have formed local infestations while others may be overwhelmed by the natural growth of the native forest.

The other side of the ledger is how the island is reverting to its natural state. In contrast with many other off-shore islands which have been farmed but are now treated as sanctuaries for native fauna and flora, it was decided not to implement large-scale planting of native vegetation. This has enabled us to monitor how a previously farmed island reverts to its natural state. Similarly no native animals have been introduced though the possibility has not been ruled out.

Hangehange marching up the hillside under a canopy of maturing kānuka on what was farmland.

Monitoring of fauna and flora takes place on a regular basis and from time to time species not previously observed have appeared on the island, including species that could not have reinvaded the island from elsewhere.

Prior to the purchase of the island into public ownership it was farmed for over a century during which time a range of exotic species was introduced both intentionally and unintentionally.
