About Motu Kaikōura
Motu Kaikōura is a scenic reserve managed by a team of volunteer Trustees.
The island has a wharf and floating pontoon (thanks to an ARC grant obtained to replace the gangway and pontoon), a 548 metre licensed airfield and several kilometres of road (thanks to the Aotea/Great Barrier Island Local Board for a grant to maintain the road). Equipment includes a tractor and accessories, off-road truck and excavator (thanks to Lion Foundation and Pub Charity for their grants). An alternator for power reticulated underground. Both Spark and One NZ have cell sites on the island.
A radio repeater was commissioned in conjunction with Glenfern and Outdoor Pursuits Centre (now known as Hillary Outdoors) for regular communications and all safety frequencies. There is an upgraded sewerage system and hot water. A solar power system has been installed. A new lodge with all kitchen facilities and lounge built by Women+Architects was completed 2018.
Please observe the Gulf Islands’ Bio security signage – Bio security is most important.
Check for mice, rats and ants. We are also working on reducing weeds, so please make sure you are not bringing any weed seeds. THANK YOU!
