Support our Work

We rely heavily on two types of support: financial through grant applications and donations, and voluntary work groups. We discuss these in turn.

Financial Support.

Donations.

We welcome donations from individuals. The Trust is a registered charity, number CC30916, so donations are normally tax deductible for New Zealand taxpayers. Donations can be made directly to the ASB Motu Kaikoura Trust bank account 12 3077 0580668 00. In addition to entering your name and “donation” on the transaction form, send an email to the Trust’s Treasurer, Harry Doig at harry.doig@gmail.com who will send you a receipt.

We are also grateful to Magness Benrow for presenting us with replacement refrigerator and washing machine. Also to Impact Offroad for a generous contribution towards the purchase of the quadtruck.

Grant successes.

We are grateful for a number of organisations that have supported our work through grants. Recent supporters include Foundation North, Auckland Council both directly and through the Aotea/Great Barrier Island Local Board, the Lottery Grants Board, the Department of Conservation and Pub Charity.

Foundation North has been a generous supporter of the island from the original purchase when it made a major contribution through to now with annual support for the running costs.

The Aotea/Great Barrier Island Local Board is another long-term supporter with many contributions enabling us to maintain fixed assets.

Thanks to the Local Board we are now proudly in possession of a defibrillator, which is located in an unlocked shed at the wharf.

The photographs below, all by Clint Stannard, show two recent examples. The first pair of photos show how Clint has been able to repair a weather damaged vital road connecting the landing and lodge area to the airstrip and bait and trap lines.

The next pair of photos show the sea damaged wharf piles before and after repairs by Clint.

To help maintain a significant water supply on the island, the Local Board also provided a grant to pay for the cost of replacing old gutters on a storage shed high above the Lodge.

Another capital grant from the Local Board has allowed us to refurbish the Ablutions Block which is now looking as good as new thanks also to Clint’s hard work.

Pub Charity

Pub Charity has supported the purchase of major items of equipment, including the recently acquired quadtruck.

Auckland Council has supported scientific surveys of the island’s biota. The Department of Conservation has helped in various ways, from support through its Community Conservation Fund to assistance in delivering a range of items.

Voluntary Work.

Volunteers may come just on a day visit or stay overnight. If planning to stay overnight, go to the accommodation page for information about accommodation at the Trust’s Lodge. More information concerning voluntary work is being prepared and will be added when ready.

Before volunteering you should check our Health and Safety Plan.
